As the pace of our time becomes further assimilated into the 24/7-rhythm of the digital economy, nothing short of transcendental happiness is on offer to us through a dizzying array of apps, technologies, gadgets — if only we could better optimize our most intimate self to align with the demands of the market.

Students from the Social Design masters department at the DAE sought to interrogate the canvas of these new economies. Capturing the destructive as well as the restorative notions of their expanding dynamics and internalized narratives of self-optimization and hyper-productivity. Through this research their aim is to better understand the ways in which these digital markets have come to influence not only the shape of design practice today but the character of our day-to-day existence.

Taking the directives of the digital marketplace to their most extreme conclusions, the students mapped onto their bodies its repetitive commands, gestures, and anxieties, desperately trying to achieve the promises of happiness and self-fulfilment locked within.
